BRUM GOONIES

In 2009, Ian Candyman initiated a groundbreaking weekly event every Thursday at Rainbow Birmingham, marking the city’s premiere venue for witnessing live Grime and Dubstep acts. This event quickly became the go-to gathering for fans of the 140bpm tempo, providing a unique platform for enthusiasts to share their passion.
Brum Goonies hosted some of the biggest names in the scene, with P Money essentially becoming a fixture at the event. His admiration for the vibe and energy of Brum Goonies was so profound that he referenced “Brum Goonies” in his hit single โSlang Like This,โ highlighting the event’s influence on the artists themselves.
The event attracted MCs from across the Midlands, eager for their chance to perform, reminiscent of the Grime scene’s early 2000s era. It wasn’t uncommon for established artists like Trilla, Jaykae, Bomma B (RIP), and Safone to make surprise appearances, contributing to the electrifying atmosphere that became a hallmark of Brum Goonies nights.
The cultural impact of Brum Goonies extended beyond music to fashion, with the core fanbase often donning brands such as Trapstar, Crooks & Castles, and D.T.A. Candyman’s connection with Trapstar led to a highly successful clothing collaboration between Trapstar and Brum Goonies in 2011, which sold out instantly.
Having been fortunate enough to attend and perform at several Brum Goonies events, I can attest to the unparalleled energy and vibe they offered. Since the final Brum Goonies, I have yet to find another rave that matches the magical atmosphere it created, making it a truly unforgettable chapter in Birmingham’s musical history.
