DJ Narrows, an innovative figure in the UK underground scene, has made a significant mark with his Dark Garage sound. Originally an avid Drum & Bass enthusiast who frequently attended raves, Narrows found his musical influences within the UK scene, steering clear of US House or Techno. His inspiration came from tracks like “Tuff Jam – Tumbling Down” and “Baffled – Going On,” which captivated him with their darker tones and innovative styles.

Narrows released his debut track, “Saved Soul,” in 2001, shortly after the tragic death of his best friend. Devastated and unemployed, he turned to music as an outlet. Just two weeks after producing “Saved Soul,” he sent a copy to @djezofficial , who promptly featured it on his Kiss FM show. The track quickly gained traction, receiving support from leading DJs and even catching the attention of Pete Tong, who requested a copy for the BBC.

“Saved Soul,” featuring the poignant sample “If it wasn’t for the music I don’t know what we’d do,” marked a turning point in Narrows’ life. In just nine months, music had transformed his existence. His darker, more distorted approach to UK Garage redefined the genre, breaking away from its typically flashy and polished sound.

Before Grime was officially recognised as a genre, Narrows’ Dark Garage sound became a favourite among MCs, helping pave the way for Grime’s evolution. This serendipitous connection significantly boosted Narrows’ profile, with MCs like Major Ace and Wiley from Pay As U Go Cartel frequently performing over “Saved Soul,” inciting explosive crowd reactions and guaranteed rewinds.

Following the success of “Saved Soul,” Narrows quickly amassed a legendary catalog, including his “G.A.R.A.G.E” remix, “Revival,” and “Want It Back.” His pioneering efforts have continued to influence the UK electronic scene, inspiring generations of producers and genres. Twenty-three years later, his contributions are still felt, with contemporary UK Bass music tracing its roots back to Narrows’ innovative style, solidifying his status as a true innovator of UK Garage and a cornerstone of not only the UK, but worldwide electronic music scene.
