DJ Q – FEAR

You recognize the piano riff, and you definitely know the bass—DJ Q’s “Fear” is a trailblazing production that reshaped the course of Bassline music.
Originally crafted in 2003, “Fear” was heavily influenced by DJ Narrows’ dark 4×4 sound. At the time, DJ Q was producing music without a particular agenda, but that changed in 2006, when he began spinning the track at Sheridans, the legendary Bassline hub. The song’s electrifying impact on the crowd quickly revealed its game-changing potential.
Using Cubase SX for production, Q created the iconic bass synth with a Novation Bass Station synthesizer, meticulously playing and resampling notes later via Reason’s Dr. Rex sampler. The track’s haunting atmosphere was further amplified by a sample taken from the climax of the 1991 thriller Cape Fear, which also inspired the track’s evocative title.
In 2007, “Fear” received an official release on Rossi B & Luca’s More 2 Da Floor imprint. The track’s thunderous drums, eerie piano melody, and raw energy not only captured the spirit of the scene but also laid the foundation for DJ Q’s unmistakable sonic identity. Over the years, Q has revisited “Fear” multiple times, creating a slew of edits that retain the explosive energy of the original.
The song’s DNA—its drum patterns and piano motif—became integral to DJ Q’s style and a blueprint for Bassline producers. It spurred a wave of imitators, many of whom sampled “Fear” directly or drew inspiration from its dark yet vibrant soundscape. “Fear” effectively established a subgenre within Bassline, where its influence remains pervasive.
Fast forward 21 years, and the legacy of “Fear” is as strong as ever. Contemporary artists like J69 and collectives such as Off Me Nut continue to honor its impact, showcasing how DJ Q’s work transcends generations. More than a genre-defining track, “Fear” is a testament to DJ Q’s enduring influence on UK underground bass music, solidifying his place as one of its true pioneers.
