MNT: THE WAR DAN

Growing up in Highfields, Leicester, MNT’s early exposure to music came from watching his father perform with his sound system, sparking a lifelong passion for music. Influenced by the reggae festival Sting and artists like Ninja Man & Bounty Killa, with Bounty Killa serving as his primary inspiration, MNT began his journey into MC’ing around the age of 13, alongside his brother DJ Twista.

Initially diving into the UK Garage scene in 2000, MNT’s focus shifted towards Grime by 2002, joining the crew 187 with his friends and brother. His encounter with DJ Total, who introduced him to Shade 1, led to an invitation to join Midlandz Mafia in 2003. Founded by Shade 1, Midlandz Mafia brought together top-tier MCs, producers, and DJs from the Midlands, including notable names like Vader, RD, Ryda, Nutcracka and Continental GT, and became a significant force in the Midlands Grime scene, making their mark at major events like Sidewinder.

MNT’s musical journey took another turn in 2006 after attending a Bassline event in Dewsbury. Despite initial reservations about the genre, the club’s energy converted him into a fan. This newfound appreciation for Bassline led to his debut release in the genre, “Get Loco,” on Piddy Py’s โ€œGiggle Riddimโ€ in early 2007. The track made waves in the Bassline scene, paving the way for nationwide performances, multiple awards, and his follow-up hit “Hmmm Yesss” being featured on a Ministry Of Sound compilation.

With his rising popularity, MNT co-founded the collective Team Get Loco with DJ Total, bringing together DJs, MCs, and producers such as SG, DJ Pantha, Recneps & Piddy Py. This collective emerged as one of the leading forces in the Bassline scene.

Seventeen years on, MNT continues to leave his mark on the mic with his distinctive war bars, securing his legacy as a legend who has spanned three generations of MC’ing. His journey from Grime to Bassline and beyond underscores his versatility and enduring influence in the UK music scene.
