UK FUNKY SKANKS

In 2009, the UK was swept up in “skank” fever, with dance routines springing up for just about everything. Whether you loved it or found it cringeworthy, there’s no denying the hold it had on the country. The craze began in late 2008, when K.I.G Family gave the nursery rhyme “Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes” a playful twist, turning it into a viral dance track. This sparked a flood of similar songs as artists raced to create their own signature “skanks,” which some feel led to UK Funky’s early decline as the trend quickly became oversaturated.
Yet, despite the mixed opinions, you can’t overlook the creativity and excitement these routines brought. For many young creators, it was a chance to find their spotlight by inventing a simple dance with friends. These skanks were also pioneers in social media promotion, as artists posted tutorials on Facebook and YouTube, sparking viral moments that caught the attention of major labels eager to ride the wave. As expected with any craze, though, it was fleeting.
Even so, it was a fun and unforgettable era—who didn’t know someone attempting the Migraine Skank? Which one brings back the best memories for you?
