DJ Q: H.U.D TO THE WORLD

DJ Q’s influence on Bassline is undeniable. With a career spanning over two decades, he has continuously pushed boundaries, leaving a permanent mark on the scene.
Growing up in a musical household, Q was destined for a life in music. His father played in a reggae band, & his mother’s love for records filled their home with diverse sounds. Encouraged by his high school music teacher, who recognised his passion for music, DJ Q was introduced to Cubase at the age of 15. This was the beginning of his journey as a producer.
Inspired by legends like El-B & Wookie, he initially focused on creating 4×4 Garage tracks. His transition to Bassline was unplanned: a fellow DJ called to tell him his music was being played at Sheffield’s Niche Nightclub, the epicenter of the Bassline movement. Intrigued, Q visited Niche & was instantly captivated by the sound. This pivotal moment transformed his productions, blending his Garage roots into what became the Bassline sound we know today.
As his tracks gained recognition, BBC 1Xtra approached DJ Q in 2004 to host their fortnightly UKG M1X Show. This opportunity brought Bassline to a national audience, allowing the genre to reach listeners far beyond its Northern roots. Initially playing a mix of UKG, Q’s show increasingly featured new Bassline tracks sent by budding producers, further fueling the genre’s growth.
Around this time, DJ Q released his debut vinyl, Love Like This, which became a scene favourite. He followed it up with a string of hits, culminating in chart success with You Wot! in 2008. Signed by Ministry of Sound, the single broke into the UK charts, marking a milestone for Bassline.
By now, his 1Xtra residency had evolved into a weekly show, becoming a vital platform for the growing genre, especially after T2’s Heartbroken introduced Bassline to mainstream audiences.
Q’s contributions to Bassline extend beyond his own productions. His mentorship & support for emerging artists have helped shape the scene, enabling many producers to build successful careers.
But this is just the beginning of DJ Q’s story. Stay tuned for part two, where I’ll explore the next decade of his career.
